Ingredients
3 tbsp butter
4 c. thinly sliced potatoes
3 tbsp flour
1 1⁄2 c. milk
1 c. grated sharp cheddar cheese
1 dash of cayenne pepper
1⁄2 c. grated cheese, to sprinkle on top
1 tsp salt
How to make Best Scalloped Potatoes
Step 1: To make the sauce, melt the butter in a small pan. Once the butter has melted, add the flour and mix well until blended. Set aside for a little while to thicken up. Then, stir in the cold milk and add the cayenne and salt.
Step 2: Place the saucepan over low heat and cook until boiling and smooth. Make sure to whisk occasionally. Decrease the heat and stir in extra cheese.
Step 3: Into a greased casserole dish, add half of the sliced potatoes. On top, pour half of the sauce. Then, add another layer of potatoes on top and pour in the remaining sauce. On top, sprinkle with more cheese.
Step 4: Place in the oven and bake at 350 degrees, uncovered, until golden brown.
Step 5: Remove from the oven when done and serve immediately. Enjoy!
Tip:
Do not skip the milk. It helps to make the texture, and it adds a layer of flavor. Milk guarantees that the sauce would be smooth and creamy. You can add extra milk to make the sauce smoother. And use cold milk.
