Your childhood is not complete without American Goulash. It’s widely known, passed down from generation to generation, and has been made in a variety of ways. It’s an easy skillet dinner with ground beef, onion, tomatoes, tomato soup, and elbow macaroni. Plus, it’s pretty fast to make. It’s classic comfort food, would not break the bank, and is crazy flavorful!
Ingredients
1 lb lean ground beef
2 tsp olive oil
2 c. (8 oz.) elbow macaroni (gluten-free if desired) (uncooked)
1 medium onion, chopped
2 cans (10-¾ oz. each) tomato soup
1 green bell pepper, chopped
2 cans (14-oz. each) diced tomatoes
Salt and pepper to taste
Pinch of cinnamon
Pinch of sugar
How to make Easy American Hamburger Goulash
Step 1: Following the package directions, cook the macaroni. When done, drain and set aside.
Step 2: While the macaroni is cooking, heat oil in a large skillet or dutch oven over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, add the ground beef, onion, and pepper into the skillet and cook for about 5 to 8 minutes or until the beef is brown and the veggies have softened. Make sure to stir and break the meat up into small chunks as it cooks.
Step 3: Now, add the tomatoes along with the tomato soup, cinnamon, and sugar. Stir well and let the mixture simmer until thoroughly heated.
Step 4: Add the drained macaroni and stir until evenly coated. Or you can stir everything in a pasta pan if your skillet is not big enough. To taste, season with salt and pepper.
Notes:
I like my goulash saucy so I used two cans of diced tomatoes but if you don’t, just use 1 can.
For this recipe, you can use any small to medium pasta shape.
Feel free to add a cup of drained corn and 1 to 2 tbsp chilli powder when adding the tomatoes for that spicy southwest vibe.
